Islam means submission to the one God, Allah. It is one of the three Abrahamic monotheistic religions (Islam, Christianity, Judaism), with about 2 billion adherents worldwide.

The Five Pillars of Islam

  1. Shahada (declaration of faith): "There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is His Messenger."
  2. Salat (prayer): Five daily prayers at prescribed times.
  3. Zakat (almsgiving): Giving a portion of one's wealth to those in need.
  4. Sawm (fasting): Abstaining from food and drink during daylight hours in Ramadan.
  5. Hajj (pilgrimage): A once-in-a-lifetime pilgrimage to Mecca for those able.

  1. Belief in Allah
  2. Belief in the Angels
  3. Belief in the Scriptures
  4. Belief in the Prophets
  5. Belief in the Day of Judgment
  6. Belief in Divine Decree

Jumu'ah (Friday Prayer)

Held at Dhuhr every Friday in congregation — the most important weekly gathering for Muslims.

Ramadan

In the 9th month of the Islamic calendar, Muslims fast from dawn to sunset. After sunset, the iftar meal is shared with family and community.

"Indeed, We will not allow the reward of one who does good deeds to be lost." — Qur'an 18:30
